What is Orienteering and Why You Should Try It
If you enjoy being outdoors, exploring new places, or challenging yourself in a different way, orienteering is well worth a try.
At its simplest, orienteering is about navigating between a series of checkpoints using a map. You decide the route, you choose the pace, and you figure out the best way to get from one point to the next. That is what makes it so engaging – no two routes are ever the same.
Some people take part competitively and run between controls, while others walk, take their time, and enjoy the surroundings. There is no pressure to be fast or experienced. Events are designed to suit everyone, including complete beginners.
Why people enjoy it
- It gets you outdoors in places you might not normally explore

Kingdom of Fife Orienteers (KFO) run regular events across Fife, from parks like Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline to forests and more rural locations. Each event offers a mix of courses, so whether you are new or experienced, there is something suitable.
If you have never tried orienteering before, the best thing you can do is simply turn up to a local event and give it a go. You will be surprised how quickly you pick it up.
