Orienteering for Beginners: What to Expect at Your First Event
If you are new to orienteering, your first event might feel a bit unfamiliar, but it is actually very straightforward once you arrive.
At a typical Kingdom of Fife Orienteers event, you will check in, receive your map, and choose a course that matches your ability. Beginner courses are designed to be simple and easy to follow, often using clear paths and obvious features.
How it works
- You are given a map showing a series of checkpoints, the start and finish.
- You are also loaned an electronic device to record your visits at the checkpoint. Do not lose it!
- Go to the Start – people at the check-in will point you in the right direction.
- Navigate to each checkpoint in order
- You decide the route between them
- Your time is recorded when you finish
You can walk, jog, or run – it is completely up to you. Many people take part just for the enjoyment of being outdoors and solving the navigation challenge.
Tips for your first event
- Start with a beginner or yellow course
- Take your time and focus on reading the map
- Ask organisers for advice before you begin
- Enjoy the experience rather than worrying about speed
KFO events are known for being welcoming and supportive, so you will never feel out of place as a beginner. It is a great way to build confidence, learn new skills, and spend time outdoors.
Once you have tried it once, you will likely want to come back for more.
